There are many water sports, from scuba diving and snorkelling to underwater hockey and shooting underwater targets. Most of these sports are not very popular, and most do not have great competitions.

Although some subjects include the phrase underwater in their names, they do not actually occur completely underwater. Some subjects are only played above water. This does not mean that all water sports are included in the water sports group.

Diving is considered the most typical water sport although it does not have competitions. Divers can see themselves as scientists, photographers or just as divers, not athletes. Divers can dive very deep underwater for long periods of time because they carry their own oxygen supply. Their oxygen tank is called an independent underwater breathing apparatus, abbreviated in English as SCUBA.

Similar to scuba diving, snorkeling is an uncompetitive water sport. One of its goals is to observe underwater from the surface. Snorklers cannot dive deep, even though their faces are completely underwater. Snorkeling usually occurs above a reef or on a shipwreck. These people often wear masks that cover their eyes and nose, and keep a mouthpiece in their mouths. The upper part of the steam pipe is above the water surface to allow air to enter.

Not all water sports are without competitions. Underwater hockey is an international sport where two teams compete to see which side scores more goals. The game is played at the bottom of the pool, and each team member wears swimming fins, masks and snorkel. Gloves, mouth guards and swimming hats are also used for safety reasons. The color of the gloves will determine which team the player belongs to.

Participants in underwater target shooting compete in various types of events. The shooters will use an underwater crossbow and they must wear diving masks, snorkel and swimming fins. A heavy strap helps them balance when shooting underwater. It also takes place at the bottom of the pool.

Spear fishing is one of the oldest water sports, and its technique may vary by practitioner. Some use a snorkel, others use a stand-alone snorkeling device, some use nothing at all and just quickly pop into the water to breathe. The fish skewers method may vary. Guns and rifles are the most commonly used devices. Some people consider the skewers to be the most environmentally friendly as they require no bait and use minimal equipment.
